Wood, Garcia lead Sierra past Panthers, Gums wins his 8th game

Using timely, late-inning hitting, the Sierra College baseball team rallied past Sacramento City 6-5 on April 12.

With the win, the Wolverines (23-9, 12-5 Big 8) kept pace in the conference race with Delta (27-6, 12-5) and Santa Rosa (22-8, 12-5 Big 8). Sacramento City is one game back at 23-10, 11-6 with seven games remain in the regular season.

Sierra travels to Sacramento City for the series finale today (2:30 pm).

Trailing 5-3 in the seventh on Thursday, Sierra pinch hitter Jordon Wood tied the game with a two-run triple off the right-field fence. Later in the inning, Isaiah Garcia put the Wolverines ahead to stay with a single to drive in Wood and eventually gave Wolverine ace Tyler Gums his 8th win of the season. Logan Wurm added two runs batted for Sierra.

Gums went seven innings, allowed five earned runs and struck out seven before yielding to Takashi Umino who shut down the Panthers for his third save of the season.

Garcia (.358 average) is currently tied for eighth in the state with 38 RBI. Gums is tied for seventh with eight wins and Nathan Barry is tied for tenth in the state with seven wins.

Sierra fell to the Panthers 5-2 on April 10 at Sacramento City. Dylan Smethurst had a home run and two RBI in the loss.
