Sierra's Dylan Smethurst singled with two out in the ninth inning to give the Wolverines a 5-4 walk-off win over Santa Rosa on Tuesday, April 24. Larry Fonseca tied the game in the eighth with a two-run double. Elijah Garcia came on in the ninth to earn the win. Gianni Bloom had two hits for Sierra.

Sierra (28-9, 17-5) is currently ranked No. 3 in California and tied for first place in the Big 8 with No. 1 ranked Delta (32-6, 17-5).

"It's exciting to be competing for a Big 8 Conference championship," said Sierra coach Rob Willson. "This is the best conference in California and to win it is a major accomplishment. With that said, our program is focused on a larger goal each year and that is the CCCAA state championship."

Sierra won the state championship in 2008 after finishing second in what was then the Big 7 Conference.

The Wolverines continue the series with Santa Rosa on Thursday (Santa Rosa 2:30pm) and Friday (Rocklin 2:30pm).
