“Dirty Dozen” wins Big 8 showdown with Cosumnes River

Two of the Big 8 Conference's top teams squared off last weekend in a highly anticipated doubleheader in Rocklin.

Coming off a 4-0 loss at Delta on March 29, the Wolverines (25-7, 13-3) rebounded nicely, taking both games from Cosumnes River 2-1 and 6-2 on March 31.

The Wolverines followed that up with a 5-1 win over Diablo Valley on April 3, which moved them into a first place tie with Delta in the Big 8.

"We are beginning the most important month of the season," said Sierra head coach Darci Brownell. "April is when the cream rises to the top in college softball."

Amaryssa Medina went the distance against DVC, allowing just three hits and a run to run her record to 15-3 on the season.  Medina overcame nine walks while striking out seven.  Hannah Slaight drove in two runs with two doubles and McKenna Anderson went 2 for 2.

In game one against Cosumnes River, Medina allowed just two hits and one earned run and Sierra (which fields just 12 players on the roster) won the game in the bottom of the seventh on an unearned run.

Medina has pitched 119.2 innings and struck out 118 hitters.  She is currently tied for sixth in the state in wins. Virgie Robello (3 for 4) and Emily Smith (2 for 3) provided the offense, driving in a run each for Sierra. The Wolverines currently sit one game behind Delta (18-10, 13-2) in the Big 8.

In game two, it was Holly Brennan providing the heavy lifting on the mound. Brennan went five innings, allowing just one run and three hits before yielding to Medina who pitched the final two innings for her first save of the season.

Medina's power at the plate was also on display when she cleared the scoreboard in left field with a massive two-run shot. Julia Cummings added two RBI and Lexi DeLozier (2 for 4) and Toni Whipkey also had runs batted in. McKenna Anderson was 3 for 4.

Next up for Sierra American River (13-17, 5-9) on Thursday, April 5. First pitch is 12 pm).
