“Dirty Dozen” rolls in the home stretch, winning streak at five games

Pitcher Amaryssa Medina

With just over two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Sierra College softball team appears primed to finish strong.

The Wolverines rolled into April with a 5-1 win over Diablo Valley and two wins (9-4 and 4-1) over American River.

Sierra currently sits at 27-7 overall and is tied for first place with Delta at 15-3 in the Big 8 Conference. Six games remain on the schedule, including a home doubleheader against the Mustangs (Saturday, April 21, 12 pm).

In game one of a doubleheader at American River, Amaryssa Medina went seven innings while posting a stat line that featured four runs, four walks and four strikeouts.

The Wolverines flexed their muscles with three home runs, one each from Virgie Robella (3x4, 3 runs batted in), Toni Whipkey (2x4, 2 RBI) and Hannah Slaight (2x4, 3 RBI). Sierra scored nine runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

In game two it was Medina again picking up the win, this time in relief of Holly Brenna who went 4.1 innings and allowed just one run. Medina pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn her 18th win of the season. Medina added a home run and two RBI for Sierra.

The Wolverines host Santa Rosa on Tuesday, April 10 (3pm) then head to Sacramento City for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 (12pm).
