Dirty Dozen down Delta, capture Big 8 championship

Softball team wins Big 8

Despite fielding a roster that runs just 12 players deep, the Sierra College softball team made no excuses on its way to capturing the 2018 Big 8 Conference championship. Tied for first place with Delta entering the weekend, the Wolverines tamed the Mustangs 8-0 and 4-1 to win the conference title out-right in front of their home crowd.

After Sierra took game one 8-0, Delta needed to win the second game to remain tied in the standings.

Sierra's Holly Brennan and Amaryssa Medina dashed Delta's hopes, combined to pitch seven innings and allowing Delta just one run. Medina picked up the win, her 21st of the season, and struck out seven. Medina was also masterful in a five-inning game one as well, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.

In the clinching win, Sierra jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, with Hannah Slaight (2 for 3) driving in two runs and Medina picking an RBI as well. Lexi DeLozier and Emily Smith both went 2 for 3 and Daniella Toschi added a run batted in.

In game one, Vergie Robello, Toni Whipkey and Julia Cummings each drove in two runs for the Wolverines who put the game out of reach with a four-run third inning.

Sierra wrapped up the regular season Tuesday, April 24 with a win over Folsom Lake, 7-0.
