Women’s Basketball played well in recent tournaments

The Sierra College women's basketball team is 6-4 on the season following a win and a loss in the Fresno City College Crossover Event this past weekend.

Sierra defeated Merced 93-53 on Friday before falling 74-67 to Fresno City on Saturday. In the win over Merced, the Wolverines were led by sophomore Alyssa Premo with 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting. Premo had 20 in the loss to Fresno City and also scored 38 in the Napa Valley Tournament championship game against San Francisco on Dec. 3.

"Some of my biggest strengths so far this season would be my ability to find my way into the key and create different ways to drive to the basket," Premo said. "Rebounding has always been a big part of my game but my shooting has definitely improved and became more consistent throughout the offseason. There are always areas to improve and no player is perfect, so for me I choose to work and improve on everything all around and push forward towards being an even better player."

Premo isn't the only Lady Wolverine stepping up as freshman and Lincoln alumna Katie Leeth led Sierra in Saturday's loss with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore and Granite Bay alumna Julianne Cotterill had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Friday's win while freshman and Rocklin alumna Beau Von Seipler totaled 13 points off the bench. Freshman Mikayla Bumgarner had a double-double against Merced with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wolverines will compete in the City College of San Francisco Tournament later this week and face Skyline on Thursday with tip off coming at 1 p.m. Big 8 Conference action begins on Dec. 20 at Modesto.
