Volleyball Falls to Cabrillo in 5-set Thriller at NorCal Finals

The cold, rainy night outside was no reflection of the heated competition in the Cabrillo gym Saturday night, as the 6th seeded Wolverines and the 3rd seeded Seahawks took to the floor in the 2019 NorCal Finals, a ticket to the State Championships on the line.

Sierra, coming off a 10 match win streak, a fourth straight Big 8 Conference title and round one playoff victory was looking for an upset and a chance to compete for the 2019 state title. Despite a valiant effort from the Wolverines, however, Cabrillo was able to edge Sierra in 5 sets for the 3-2 victory.

Cabrillo looked dominant in the first set, winning that one 25-15. Not pleased with that result, the Wolverines rallied and returned fire in set two, taking that one 25-22 to even the score at a set a piece. In the third, Sierra again stumbled, finding themselves trailing by 14 points by the time Cabrillo won it 25-11. Sierra was on again, off again all evening, but was certainly on fire in set four with a 26-24 victory to force a deciding fifth set.

Despite the efforts of the Wolverines to keep their season alive, Cabrillo was, in the end, the victor, taking set five 15-5. Sierra has struggled in five set battles all year, with a record of 5-set ,atches of just 2-4, and ends 2019 with an overall record of 22-8.
