Coach Howard has a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science. He is a lifelong runner in the Sacramento area. A few of his highlights are finishing 6th at the CCCAA State Cross Country Championships in 1974 for Cosumnes River College, 33rd at the NCAA Division 2 Cross Country Championships for Sacramento State, competed in the 1980 Olympic Trials for the marathon, a distance that he holds a 2:18.06 PR, and two time winner of the Western States 100 mile race. In 2012, he was inducted into the Cosumnes River College Hall of Fame for running achievements in both Cross Country and Track. In 2016, he was inducted into the Sacramento Running Association Hall of Fame for running achievements.

In 2017, he was awarded the CCCAA Assistant Coach of the Year in the sport of Cross Country. Jim has 15 years of coaching experience in both cross country and track. His top athlete was Jenica Dodge who had double wins for the 10k and 5k in both the CCCAA Northern California Track and Field Championships and the CCCAA State Track and Field Championships in 2016. Jenica was awarded the Top Track Female Athlete of the 2016 State Track and Field Championships.
