Wolverine Week in Review, Oct. 28 – Nov. 3

Men's and Women's Basketball kick off 2019 season, Football adds a victory over Feather River, Women's Soccer and Volleyball both pick up wins while Women's Golf, Women's Cross Country and Men's and Women's Water Polo gear up for conference tournaments and post season action.


Men's Basketball:

The Sierra College Men's Basketball team were crowned George Gogo Classic Champions last Saturday, after they defeated both West Valley and Feather River for the title. Sierra (the tournament host) faced West Valley on Friday in a close one, but pulled off the 69-59 victory to advance to the championship game against Feather River.

On Saturday, the championship game was again a back and fourth affair, but Sierra found their stride in the second half, toppling Feather River 71-62 for the title and a 2-0 record to start off their 2019 season.

Sierra will host Butte on Tuesday, November 12 for a 6:00pm game in Rocklin.

Women's Basketball:

Sierra Women's Basketball headed down the road to Stockton, CA this week to compete in San Joaquin Delta's Joselyn Mancebo Tournament.

On November 1, the first day of competition, Sierra downed Solano 85-68, with Sierra's Kailee McCarrick racking up an impressive 46 points on the evening. The following day Sierra came up against Merced, a participant in last years CCCAA final four, but the Wolverines again pulled out the win with a 77-67 final.

With the second win, Sierra would now face off against Big 8 rival Delta for the championship. Despite a fierce contest befitting of two of the Big 8's top programs, Sierra fell to the Mustangs 80-61, and start off the season with a 2-1 record.

Next up, Sierra hosts Feather River on Saturday, November 9 at 5:00pm in the Wolverine's 2019 home opener.

Women's Cross Country:

On November first, Sierra Women's Cross Country headed to Legion Park in Modesto, CA for the 2019 Big 8 Conference meet. Sierra placed second, after completing the 5k team event in 1:39:14, and scoring 53 points, just behind Santa Rosa who scored 50 points but with a team time of 1:39:24. Sierra next heads to Toro Park in Salinas, CA for the NorCal finals on November 8 at 10:00am.

Football:

Sierra College Football headed up to Quincy, CA last Saturday to face Feather River College in league play. Sierra kicked things off with a 30 yard interception return from Angel Hernandez, before Feather River tied things up, and at just 14:49 the game was 7-7. At 12:27,. Sierra again scored when Matt Smart caught a 9 years pass from from Qyntyn Pilcher. Feather River again responded, this time with two touchdown going up on the Wolverines 21-14, and after a 24 yard field goal from Sierra's Kenyon Bowyer the game was 21-17 in favor of the Eagles at the half.

That was not an issue for the Wolverines, however, as Feather River was unable to score at all in the second half, and could only watch as Sierra scored three touchdowns, a safety and a field goal in the second half. Sierra would end the game with another win, taking down Feather River 41-21 and improving to 5-3 overall, 2-1 in conference.

Sierra hosts Butte this Saturday at 1:00pm in Rocklin in the Wolverines final regular season home game of 2019.

Women's Golf:

Last Tuesday (October 29) was the conclusion of Big 8 Women's Golf competition, with teams heading to Modesto JC for the 10th and final round of 2019 league play. Sierra has spent the early part of the season in fierce competition with Modesto for the second and third spots. However, by the end of league competition Sierra came in as the third place team, with a total score of 128, six behind Modesto in second. Reedly took the first place spot with 158.

Sierra's Melanie Anderson finished third in Big 8 play, finishing with an adjusted average of 78.81, just .47 behind first place in what turned out to be a close race for MVP.

Sierra will head to the NorCal championship on November 4 and 5, looking to defend their 2018 title and advance to the 2019 state tournament in Morrow Bay on November 17 and 18.

Women's Soccer:

Women's Soccer hosted Sacramento City College on Tuesday, October 29 before having a bye on Friday, November 1. In the Sacramento City match, Sierra scored three in the first half, Emma Schulz knocking in the first from Grace Vargas & Paige Martinsen. Following her lead, Paige Martinsen (asst. Laney Paduveris) scored a second goal and Quincey Gieck (asst. Emma Schulz) closed out the first half scoring, Sierra with a 3-0 lead. In the second, it was all about Grace Vargas as she netted all three of Sierra's second half goals, off an assist from Laney Paduveris and two from Emma Schulz. While the Panthers were able to sneak in two goals of their own in the second, Sierra held on to win the match 6-2.

Overall this season, Sierra is 15-3 overall (10-2 in Big 8 play) and averages 3.06 goals per game with a shot percentage of .289. Sierra is ninth in the state in goals scored and the seventh most assists of any team in the CCCAA. Only counting league play, Sierra has the third most shots on goal of any CCCAA team, and is also ninth in the goals scored category.

Sierra hosts Diablo Valley this Tuesday (November 5) at 3:00pm, followed by their final regular season home game against Cosumnes River on November 8, also at 3:00pm. Following those matches, Sierra will play two more away contests before closing out 2019 Big 8 play.

Men's Water Polo:

Men's Water Polo finished out Big 8 competition with an 18-11 win over Modesto last Wednesday in Rocklin. Sierra finishes the season 16-8 overall and 3-1 in league play. Over the course of the season, Sierra scored 312 goals in 24 games, with 90 assists and an average of 13 goals per game.

The Big 8 Conference tournament will be held November 8 and 9 at Diablo Valley College to determine the 2019 Big 8 Champion.

Women's Water Polo:

Sierra Women's Water Polo finished out 2019 Big 8 play last Wednesday, also facing Modesto and soundly trouncing the Pirates 16-3. Sierra went undefeated in regular season Big 8 play, and will look to defend their 2018 Big 8 title at the upcoming 2019 Big 8 tournament on November 8 and 9 at Diablo Valley College.

Volleyball:

Women's Volleyball currently sits at second in the Big 8 after a string of 3-0 victories over Modesto (25-16, 25-14, 25-17), Folsom Lake (26-24, 25-17, 25-23), Cosumnes River (25-11, 25-17, 25-20) and Diablo Valley (25-16, 25-17, 25-17). With only four league matches left to play, Sierra is eying a fourth straight Big 8 title, as the Wolverines trail American River for the lead by just one game.

The final four Big 8 matches of 2019 for Sierra are home against Sacramento City on Friday, November 8, followed by Santa Rosa at home on the 13th, then an away match against American River on the 15th followed by San Joaquin Delta at home on the 19th. All matches are at 6:30pm.

Wrestling:

Wrestling hosted Sacramento City last Wednesday, October 30 in a conference battle, but was unable to pull out the win as they fell 40-15 to the Panthers. Sierra now hits the road for several duals against four year schools, heading to Menlo College, the Northern Colorado Open and Embry Riddle before returning to face CCCAA opponents in the State Dual - South.
