Wolverine Week in Review — February 4, 2020


This week saw the Spring season really get under way, with Baseball and Softball both hosting teams in their 2020 home openers. On the road, Men's and Women's basketball played two games a piece, and will both be back in action at home this Friday, February 7th when they host Diablo Valley College in the annual Coaches vs Cancer game, with free admission and the American Cancer Society accepting donations. The men will play at 5:30, followed by the women at 7:30. Visit the coaches vs cancer page for more info on the event.

Men's Basketball was away at Modesto and Delta college this past week, taking down the Pirates of Modesto 83-66, while falling to the Delta Mustangs 80-63. The women's team picked up a 74-67 win at Modesto, but again came up short at Delta, falling 86-77 to the number one ranked Mustangs.

Baseball hosted Lassen, Shasta and Feather River in their 2020 home opening weekend, and kept their home record perfect, taking down Lassen 17-1 on Thursday, blanking Shasta 8-0 on Friday and capping off their weekend with a 12-1 win over Feather River and improving to 4-2 on the season.  Sierra College Baseball so far has outscored their 2020 opponents 56-16, with a batting average of .313, on base percentage of .409 and 5 home runs. Baseball travels to De Anza on Tuesday, February 4 and Solano on February 6, before returning home to host Solano on Friday, February 7 at 1:00pm.

The Softball season officially began this week as well, with the Wolverine squad opening play at Merced last Thursday before hosting Fresno City in a doubleheader last Saturday in the 2020 softball home opener. Sierra split with Merced, falling just short against the Blue Devils 8-7, before bouncing back with an impressive 11-1 victory Thursday night. The following Saturday, Sierra hosted Fresno City in a doubleheader in Rocklin, winning game one 4-0 and game two 3-1. Wolverine softball is now 3-1 overall, with 25 runs scored so far this season. Sierra will host Feather River and San Mateo in a three way matchup on Saturday, February 8th, with the Wolverines taking on Feather River at 10:00am and San Mateo at 2:00pm.

Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving both took victories at the NorCal Relays last Saturday at Santa Rosa Junior College. The men will compete at the San Francisco City College Invitational on February 7 and 8, and the women will head to Walnut, CA on February 20th through the 22nd for the Mt. San Antonio Invitational.

Women's tennis will hit the road Tuesday, February 4th for a match against Sequoias, while men's Golf will head to Stockton for their first tournament of the season on Monday, February 10.
