Sierra Softball last weekend wrapped up non-conference play with wins over Shasta and Ohlone, and currently sit at 10-3-1 overall in 2020, and was ranked 8th in the state and 4th in NorCal in this weeks California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
Sierra's first game of the year didn't quite go as planned, when they fell to Merced in their first game of 2020. Not deterred, the Wolverines bounced back with a 11-1 run rule victory over Merced in game two of their doubleheader to start the season 1-1.
Sierra then went on a 6-1 streak, taking down the aforementioned Merced, Fresno (2 games), Feather River and Gavilan and only ceding a game to NorCal #2 San Mateo. Sierra then tied Sequoias 5-5 after 8. Despite plating three runs in the top of the ninth, the game was called due to darkness before COS could answer back, causing the score to be reverted to the 5-5 8-inning tie.
A win over Bakersfield was overshadowed by a 15-0 run rule loss at the hands of NorCal #1 Monterey Peninsula, but Sierra again came back with big wins over Solano, Shasta and Ohlone to close out non-conference play at 10-3-1.
Two of Sierra's three losses come at the hands of NorCal #1 and #2, Monterey Peninsula and San Mateo respectively. Sierra enters Big 8 play with the best batting average (.386) and best on base percentage (.456) in the league, while plating 103 runs on 152 hits, with 29 doubles, 3 triples, 9 home runs and 87 RBI.
Sierra is the only Big 8 team to have not yet played a league game, and as such currently sits at 6th in the big 8 with a 0-0 conference record. Diablo Valley – who Sierra plays Tuesday – is 0-2 in league, having lost their first two games to Folsom Lake last Saturday, while American River – who Sierra plays on Saturday – is 1-1 in league after a split with Sacramento City.
Sierra opens Big 8 play Tuesday, February 25 when they host Diablo Valley at 3:00pm, followed by Sierra's Big 8 opening weekend against American River on Saturday, February 29 at 12:00pm and 2:00pm, also at Sierra College in Rocklin.
