Wolverines Punch Ticket to 2020 State Championship with 90-73 Victory over Butte

Sierra College Women's Basketball is headed to the 2020 CCCAA State Championship! With Saturday's 90-73 win over Butte, Sierra (NorCal #6) upset the Roadrunners (NorCal #3) to punch their ticket to Lemoore and a chance at the 2020 state title.

Sierra Women's Basketball has been prolific in California Community College basketball for quite some time, including winning a state championship in 1999, making 10 elite eight appearances since 1998 and competing in postseason play for 28 straight seasons. Sierra (NorCal #6, changed to NorCal #4 for the state tournament), is now 22-7 overall and will face SoCal #1 seed Moorpark on Thursday, March 12 at 5:00pm at West Hills College Lemoore (555 College Avenue - Lemoore, CA 93245).

In Saturday's matchup at Butte, Sierra jumped on top early, and with the exception of a few minutes in the first quarter, held the lead for the remainder of the game, at one point stretching it to as much as 25 points.

Sierra out preformed Butte I'm most major statistical categories, including an impressive 75% free throw percentage, a 37.5 3-point percentage and a field goal percentage of 45.2% compared to Butte's field goal percentage of 38.2%, 3-point percentage of 27.8 and free throw percentage of 41.7%.

Jenna Duley paced the Wolverines in points scored with a game high 28 (Butte's Chloe Mayer also posted 28 points), followed by Devon Lewis and Skyy Jackson with 15 apiece. Duley and Kiki Griffin both picked up 8 rebounds each, and Lewis picked up a game leading 4 assists.

"Butte's a good team" said head coach Brandie Murrish. "I think our defense and sticking to the plan really made the difference. Our players came into it focused and ready to play and I'm really proud of them and their unwavering resolve this postseason."

Sierra will head to the state championship next weekend at West Hills College Lemoore, and will play Moorepark in the quarter finals on Thursday, March 12 at 5:00pm. Three out of the four NorCal schools to make it to the state championship come from the Big 8 conference. Big 8 teams to make it to Lemoore are Sierra (N4), San Joaquin Delta  (N1) and Diablo Valley (N2). They are joined by Chabot (N3) from the north, and Moorpark (S1), Mt. San Antonio (S2), Ventura (S3) and Palomar (S4) from the south.
