After having two matches of finishing in the bottom half of the competition, the Sierra College women's golf team has been improving and came second in the last Big 8 Conference Tournament at Buena Vista Golf Course in Taft last Thursday.

The Wolverines were second out of eight teams with a score of 333, their lowest of the season. Leading the way were Veronica Cantu-Mayer and Sharon McFarland who both shot scores of 77 while Lauren Schmidt fired an 89. For McFarland, it was not only her low score of the season, but she also accomplished the feat on her 19th birthday.

"I went into the day really hoping to break 80, and to shoot a 77 was really awesome," McFarland said. "Even though I have been having trouble with my swing lately, my putting, chipping and my mental game pulled through and I was able to scramble for a great round. Helping lead my team to second, especially on my birthday, was super exciting and I'm proud of my team for shooting well."

Kiley Menne shot a 90 while Maddy Caspar rounded out the team with a 106. Sierra is playing at Turlock Golf and Country Club on Thursday and will compete in the NorCal Regionals on Nov. 5 as they look to make it to the State Tournament at Hunter Ranch Golf Course on Nov. 13.

"I think both my team and I are super excited to compete and go to states," McFarland said. "We are all excited to play and hopefully have a good finish to our season. This season has been really fun and I'm honestly not ready for it to be over."
