Sierra Picks Up Two More Wins, Now 4-0 After First Week of Play

Sierra College Volleyball picks up two more wins Friday afternoon as they improve to 4-0 on the season. With the August 31 defeats of Feather River and Butte, the Wolverines currently lead the state in kills (179), assists (164) and points (247.5). (Stats Source, CCCAA)

In match one against Feather River, Sierra dropped the first set 18-25 before coming back with a vengeance, winning sets 2 (25-13), 3 (25-12) and 4 (25-16) for the 3-1 match victory. Meghan Merlino, Madison Meteer and Jasmine Dean all recorded double digit kills with 15, 13 and 12 respectively. Alex Cook was responsible for 48 of Sierra's 56 assists, while Alyssa Orteza had 19 digs in the four set match.

Match two for Sierra pitted them against the Butte College Roadrunners, which saw Sierra go up early with a 25-10 first set win, then a 25-13 second set victory. Then the Wolverines ran into a bit of trouble, dropping set 3 by just two points (25-23). Sierra rallied quickly though, winning set 4 25-18 for the 3-1 defeat of the Roadrunners. Meghan Merlino led the Sierra team in kills with 13, with Alex Cook again setting up most if the Sierra points, assisting 31 out of 38 times. Alyssa Orteza again led the team with 14 digs, with Kapri Pelle recording 10 digs in the match.

Sierra will hit the road next week, playing Gavilan and Fresno on Wednesday, September 5 before returning to Rocklin on Saturday, September 8 to host De Anza at 10:00am.
